  • Imagine stepping into a living room where you feel instantly welcome. You grab a drink, kick off your shoes maybe, settle down on some pillows and before you know it you are part of a ritual that has been taking place for thousands of years around the world: the sharing of food, music and stories. This is The Grand Pillow Society.

What happens when an angry teenage girl meets an 85 year-old art collector with a distinct dislike of children? Separated by 70 years age difference, they find connection through a shared disappointment in the generations that stand between them. Their story, told through words, music and dance, delves ever deeper, revealing the multifaceted meaning of friendship.

The Grand Pillow Society old-style events are not possible in these times of physical distancing. So we are looking for other ways to continue to bring you live English storytelling. For our event in the 2020-2021 season we bring you the Premiere of a lockdown-baby. A performance that came to be when an old story found itself in a house with some musicians and a dancer during lockdown. Out of that meeting grew this performance: Gerhard, a befitting story for these times, a story about friendship and distance.
