Noorderzon: Nature Theatre of Oklahoma
Burt Turrido. An Opera
- language no problem
After many a years we can at last welcome them back. Since first performing at Noorderzon and other festivals in Europe beginning in 2006, the idiosyncratic Nature Theatre of Oklahoma have built an international reputation. This new production, Burt Turrido. An Opera is their very first ‘opera’ – if you go so far as to call it that. Written in New York during the first wave of coronavirus and lockdown, it playfully reflects on the uncertainty of life, unforeseeable and distorted as if seen via a funfair mirror. Burt Turrido, our ‘hero’, is not exactly having the time of his life, having been shipwrecked, enslaved and then imprisoned. Of course, being an opera, the tragedy doesn’t end there… A catastrophic storm ensues, an immaculate conception, a murder, a ménage à trois, a mock execution, a birth, an alien invasion …. until – of course! - someone gets gored by a narwhal. Burt Turrido. An Opera is a fantastical and hilarious absurdist dream for realists and surrealists alike.
“One of the most innovative theater companies in New York… Nature Theater seeks to unearth something that approaches beauty, or at least a fresh, strange kind of entertainment.” – The New York Times
Nature Theatre of Oklahoma
Nature Theatre of Oklahoma is a New York award-winning art and performance group under the direction of Pavol Liska and Kelly Copper, founded in 2004. With each new project, they attempt to set an impossible challenge for themselves and the audience - working from inside the codes and confines of established genres and exploding them. No two projects are formally the same, but the work is always full of humor, earnestness, rigor, and the audience plays an essential role - whether as spectators or as participants in the work. Nature Theatre of Oklahoma makes art to affect a shift in the perception of everyday reality that extends beyond the site of performance and into the world in which we live.
