• Noorderzon: Yasuko Yokoshi
      Hangman Takuzo

    • language no problem
    • partner programme
  • Film | Kyoto, Japan / New York, USA

Every day, Takuzo hangs himself from a tree in his garden. He has thus been practising hanging for forty years. Takuzo is one of the three eccentric characters followed by Japanese filmmaker Yasuko Yokoshi in his film Hangman Takuzo. Namiko Kawamura is a meditative pedestrian, while Mika Kurosawa is the ‘godmother’ of contemporary Japanese dance.
In the cinema verité style practised by Yokoshi, fact and fiction mix and merge in refreshing fashion, interspersed by the candid conversations Yokoshi conducts with his life partner Mika.
Hangman Takuzo had its Dutch premiere at Noorderzon 2016 and we’re happy to present the film yet another time, in a newly adapted version.

With live Q&A in the afternoon and recorded interview in the evening.

“What sounds morbid proved the opposite, an affirmation of life through his closeness with death”
- New York Times
