      Layer (Work in Progress)

  • Layer is a dance theater experiment between the Netherlands and Australia combining live performances and 3D visuals to explore the fractured nature of human connectedness and identity in times of global self-isolation. Three dancers - two in Australia, one in the Netherlands - dance together and tell their stories about displacement in an interactive space that can be seen live for a theater audience, but due to the projections is also suitable for viewing at home.

Layer is about longing for a place where you are not; your native soil. You can’t be there physically, but you can be there virtually. This produces a fragmented identity. The Australian young dancer Olympia Kotopoulos works and lives in Groningen, the French Cloe Fournier is in Sydney and neither can go home. Their desires and dreams about “home” and their feelings of displacement are the basis for this work. They are filmed with LIDAR 3D cameras and “see” each other through AR technology, allowing them to dance with each other in real time.

Layer reflects on a number of issues concerning globalization and the associated climate crisis. With the corona crisis, these issues have become more urgent than ever. In the arts, it’s common for artists and especially dancers to travel all over the world for their work. Corona has forced us to stop and turn to our homes, which has given the local importance again. What consequences does globalization have on our working lives and private lives in times of corona? Digitally we are more connected than ever, but more than ever we experience the lack of physical contact and having a nice home. Layer touches these painful issues and tries to alleviate the pain with increasingly better alternatives to physical contact, while being at a distance.

ShELFISH is collaborating on this project with the renowned Australian physical theater company Stalker. This company came up with the concept based on the situation concerning COVID-19 in Sydney and approached ShELFISH as an artistic partner to virtually share this project. Stalker Theater has been creating highly acclaimed innovative, interdisciplinary, physical and visual theater projects for over twenty years. Their work tours in Australia and around the world. In the last few years, the company has focused on developing the link between live theater, installations and interactive technology, both indoors and on location.

Other collaboration partners for Layer are the Australian artists from Box of Birds and multidisciplinary art collective WERC from Groningen.
